I look forward to including here all the incredible things that I learn about these creatures on a regular basis and hearing responses from others who raise alpacas. I have been privileged to own alpacas for 7 years and the herd has progressed dramatically, not without it's ups and downs. After attending the 2010 Smowmass auction a few weeks ago for a benchmark on how my herd was doing, I came away with a few impressions. Density! Julie Skinner has an awesome teacher's heart. I would love to pick her brains for an afternoon! I was relieved to see that I have all the qualities that I need to create the perfect alpaca already in my herd, just spread out over as many different animals. I have bloodlines from earlier Snowmass breeding stock that I originally purchased from Colorado, and although I feel that I am recreating the wheel, I have enjoyed watching the changes in each generation. I don't know if I would have chosen to "breed up" if I had known what I know now. We have invested more money over the years and if I had it to do over...but it is rewarding to experience making such improvements one's self.
We have exciting plans for the future here in Arizona, and we will be sharing those as we go along. Some of the topics I now feel qualified to explore are:

Blue-eyed whites
Bottle babies
Teaching moms to nurse
Producing grays from non-gray parents
Parrelli horsemanship for alpaca owners
Lead training
Drawing blood
Plasma infusions
Navajo weaving
Dying in the kitchen
Hand spinning
Shearing
Trimming toe nails

Stay tuned.
I love you all for your adventuresome spirit and I hope to share with you through the weeks to come.
Kathryn
